Socrates called it maieutics. the art of midwifery. Not because he had the answers, but because he helped others to "give birth" to ideas that were already within them. His tool was simple: questions. Questions that made people uncomfortable, that revealed contradictions, that forced them to think. This method. structured dialogue that guides without imposing. became the foundation of Western education. But its most practical application today is not in universities. It's in corporate training, medical simulations, negotiation exercises. And increasingly, in how humans teach machines what they cannot learn by themselves.
Gyms for Human Judgment
How do you train a skill that has no right answer? With simulations. Pilots use flight simulators, surgeons practice on models before touching patients, negotiators face actors trained to resist. The principle is always the same: create controlled friction. Neuroscience confirms this. when we face ambiguity under pressure, the brain activates networks that don't light up by reading theory. Every mistake in a safe environment reconfigures our response patterns. Role-plays are, in essence, gyms for human judgment.
The corporate world discovered this decades ago. In sales, methodologies like SPIN Selling and Challenger Sale transformed the profession: the best salespeople are not those who give the best answers, but those who ask the best questions. Where Artificial Intelligence Fails
Now, the uncomfortable question: can artificial intelligence do this? The short answer is no. LLMs systematically fail where human judgment is critical. When faced with the "trolley problem," they default to statistical probabilities without considering cultural values. In mental health conversations, they give temperate answers that invalidate emotions. They interpret "bank" as a financial institution when the context clearly indicated the riverbank. They can generate text that sounds intelligent, but they cannot navigate ambiguity with discretion. They cannot read what is not said.
And here comes the unexpected twist. For AI to improve in what it cannot do alone, it needs humans to train it. Not programmers. judgment trainers. The process is called RLHF: Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback. Humans evaluate responses generated by the model and decide which is better, more accurate, more ethical, more human. That decision cannot be automated. It requires experience, context, values. It requires, in other words, everything that is trained with role-plays. The circle closes: the same method we use to develop human judgment is now the method for teaching machines the limits of their own intelligence.
The Future Belongs to Those Who Judge
This redefines what it means to be valuable in the labor market. For decades, technical knowledge was the currency. Knowing Excel, knowing how to program, knowing how to analyze data. These skills don't disappear, but they become commoditized. What cannot be commoditized is judgment under ambiguity. The empathy that detects what the client doesn't say. The common sense that knows when a technically correct answer is humanly incorrect. The Data Indexers of the future will not be those who know the most, but those who judge best.
Next time you face an ambiguous situation. a difficult negotiation, a decision with no clear answer, an AI model that "sounds good" but something doesn't quite add up. remember that you are exercising a 2,400-year-old skill that no machine can replicate.
